Standards of practice

Sections 35 – 40 of the PSISA state that:

  • You must always carry your license with you, even when doing “plain-clothing” guard work, including, but not limited to, bodyguard & loss prevention.
  • You must identify yourself as a security guard and show your license to any member of the public if asked to do so.
  • Security guards must wear a uniform with the words SECURITY on the back, with the only exceptions being loss-prevention work as well as bodyguards.

Agencies are required to provide uniforms that are compliant and up to date with the ministry’s standards.

Identification tag with the security guards full name and/or license number must be on the front.

The word “SECURITY” must be written on the back of the shirt.

  • It must be at least 10 cm and in a color that contrast the rest of the uniform.

Security guard uniforms CANNOT include the following:

  • Rank chevrons
  • Black or Navy-blue collared shirts
  • Striped trousers
  • Police-style forage caps

MARKED VEHICLES: (automobile or vehicle with 4 wheels, including cars and trucks).

If a security guard is using a vehicle that is MARKED for security services, the following rules must be followed:

  • The word SECURITY or SECURITE must be displayed in upper case letters in a colour that does not contrast with the colour of the vehicle.
  • On both sides of the vehicle, in letters not less than 10 centimetres high and
  • On the front and back of the vehicle not less than 8 centimetres high Reg. 364/07
  • The word security or sucurite may also appear in part of the licensee’s crest or logo. Reg 364/07
  • The vehicle must not have any red, blue, gold or yellow stripes or combination of those colours except as part of the licensee’s crest or logo.
  • A vehicle must not have the following terms or variations of them displayed on it DETECTIVE, PRIVATE DETECTIVE, POLICE, OFFICER or agent de police or Law enforcement or execution de la loi.
